Last Rites Gallery and guest curator Andrew Michael Ford (director of Ad Hoc Art, curator of Deep Pop) have decided to find out what several of today’s brightest art stars are capable of when asked to create ONE piece of what could be considered truly ‘dark art’. Many artists find themselves in a nice groove [...]

Gates of Purgatory
R.L. Frisby is a self taught artist based in Tulsa who creates complex and obsessively rendered bio-mechanical compositions. They often feature a centralized image surrounded by complicated patterns. While obviously giving a nod to the master of the genre, HR Giger, Frisby’s work is more colorful and has an enigmatic puzzle like quality to it.

Häxan (1922)
Witches cavorting naked with lusty devils, a baby drained of blood and tossed into a stew, women lined up to kiss Satan’s bulbous ass and demonic orgies are all depicted in the 1922 film Häxan. Benjamin Christensen’s legendary movie explores the history of witchcraft and its persecution in a semi-documentary form. Its bold depictions of torture, madness, and carnality made [...]

Third Eye
Wayne Martin Belger constructs sacred photographic machines that he then uses to capture kindred imagery. These constructions are essentially handmade pinhole cameras that are assembled from relics and custom machined parts. These cameras have a sacred mystical feel to them and seem to be imbued with the spiritual presence of the relics.

The Anatomy Lesson
The word diorama conjures images of museum displays and science fairs, but Australian artist Mark Powell takes this notion and turns it on its head. He creates miniture tableaus displaying nightmarish scenes of torture, dissection, and suffering that seem suspended in time. We ,the viewer, become like Dante bearing witness to the horror of the Inferno as we transverse the nine levels of Hell.

The fear I [...]

Legendary Joe Petagno is best known for his Motörhead album covers, after all he has painted ever one of them since 1975. He is also responsible for creating the bands iconic “mascot” Snaggletooth, which has become one the most recognizable images in heavy metal history. This accomplishment is both a blessing and a curse. For over 30 [...]

Mouth 2
Karl Persson’s work is a wonderful painterly affair showing his love for the figural. Academically rendered, a great number of his works feature human figures, mostly voluptuous nude females, in submissive and distorted positions. The audience is given the point of view of voyeur or master, the one who is subjecting these innocents to cruelty or humiliation for our collective visual pleasure.
